Burying the Hatchet is the Precondition for US-Iran Rapprochement

A lot of ink is being spilled analyzing the pros and cons of the recently concluded US-Iran nuclear deal between Iran and the 5+ 1 countries (4 permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany), and there is ample show of emotions about this deal involving different actors. The Arab states are upset because they concluded that its successful implementation would lead to an era of US-Iran rapprochement in which Iran, more than the Arab states, would be the focus of America’s attention. The Israelis are mad because they see the emergence of a nuclear Iran in the distant future as a result of it. More to the point, Israel’s Prime Minister , Benyamin Netanyahu, envisions that deal as the first historical step toward bringing about an end to Israel’s own preeminence, related to its nuclear deterrence in the region. A study prepared for the RAND Corporation addresses precisely that point when it notes, “Nuclear weapons would probably reinforce Iran's traditional national secu

Nuclear Deterrence, Nuclear Rabbis, and Nuclear Mullahs

by Ehsan Ahrari on December 4, 2012, No Comments

When it comes to nuclear deterrence, there is no difference between how it is perceived among the nuclear rabbis of Israel and the nuclear mullahs of Iran.  The nuclear rabbis are the Likudniks and other right wing politicians of Israel's official community who are committed to saving the Jewish state through the use of nuclear weapons. The nuclear mullahs are their Muslim counterparts of the Islamic republic who hold similar views about the use of nuclear weapons. The chief difference is that the perception of the nuclear rabbis is deemed sacred, valid, and legitimate in Washington and in other Western capitals, while that of the nuclear mullahs is regarded as phony.  As such, the nuclear deterrence of the mullahs is not regarded as a serious rationale for the survival of the Iranian government.  However, as a concept, nuclear deterrence is supposed to be valid, since it becomes the chief rationale forwarded by Israel and Iran to establish legitimacy of their respective nuclear wea

The “Banana Republic” of the United States?: Not Quite

by Ehsan Ahrari on September 17, 2012, No Comments

Is the United States is in the process of becoming a banana republic?  It is an absurd question, but that was how Binyamin Netanyahu was treating it last Sunday.  During an interview on CNN, which clearly appeared as an attempt of the Israeli Prime Minister to interfere in the presidential election of the United States, he demanded that the Obama administration establish a clear "red line," which Iran cannot cross with its nuclear program. The Transforming Arab World to the US: We’ll Genuflect No More!

The diffidence shown by the autocratic rulers to the unabashedly pro-Israeli American policy is becoming history in the Middle East, as the dictators are falling and the emirs and kings of that region are counting their last days in power.  The recent bastion of America's one-sided policy in that conflict has been the U.S. Congress.  It is interesting to watch how the Republican's brazen assertiveness shows in their criticism of the Obama administration regarding the Palestinian resolve to gain the approval of the United Nations for their statehood.  One of the Republican presidential candidates, Rick Perry, criticized President Obama's alleged policy of "appeasement" of the Palestinians.  Of course, Perry ought to know.  He is a long-time "expert" on U.S. affairs in the Middle East.  If he were handed a blank map of the world, I wonder whether he would be able find the region called the Middle East.  Yet, he has discovered a deep love of Israel now that he is begging for Jewi

Israel in Need of Its Own Version of the “Awakening”

by Ehsan Ahrari on September 18, 2011, No Comments

Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, is going to the U.N. Security Council next Friday to seek independent statehood for Palestine.  The United States has done all it could to talk Abbas out of it.  Now, it is going to use its infamous veto to deny statehood for Palestine.  That will be a shame for a country that always wants to be seen as the world's leading champion of liberty and freedom.  The Obama administration's expected veto is all about winning Barack Obama's second term.  The Jewish voters are already upset with President Obama for not blindly siding with the Jewish state as all American presidents have done.  And the Arabs are not exactly happy with him for caving in to Israel's pushback of his original demands about freezing the Jewish settlements in occupied Palestine.
